SCOPE

During the Paralympics in London 2012, 2.7 million tickets were sold and 1.3 million tweets on Paralympics were twittered. Adapted physical activity, as well as the role of technology in adapted sports, suddenly received increased attention. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) recognizes the importance of technological innovations and science in sports, as highlighted by the conference theme of the Paralympic VISTA meeting: ‘Equipment and Technology’ (1-4 May 2013) in Bonn. In rehabilitation sciences, adapted sports are of interest in the context of a healthy lifestyle, mobility and participation, as expressed by the 'Rehabilitation: Mobility, Exercise & Sports' in Groningen (23-25 april 2014). In the first IcSPORTS conference on Sports and Technology, a special session on 'Technology in Adapted Sports' can thus not be absent: How is technology involved in adapted sports in a daily life/health setting, as well as Paralympic performance? And how can individuals with a disability use this technology in sports to optimize health, mobility, participation or performance? With this initiative, we hope to bring together researchers from all over the world to discuss the State of The Art of Sports and Technology in Adapted Sports/Paralympics.
