Symposium
Sport For ALL - Sport in the Cities - Sport4all 2015

16 November, 2015 - Lisbon, Portugal

Within the International Congress on Sport Sciences Research and Technology Support - icSPORTS 2015

SCOPE

The ability to practice sport is a basic human right for all individuals, as stated in the
Olympic Charter. The practice of sport not only enables people to live more active but can
also teach vital life skills and values, and is crucial to improving the quality of people’s
lives.
Part of the Sport for All Initiative is related with the creation of programs that encourages
cities and communities to develop an attitude of active living. Physical inactivity, along
with an unhealthy diet, tobacco use and alcohol intake, is a major preventable risk factor
in non- communicable disease and global mortality around the world.
This Session is part of one of those initiatives. Vela+ (Sailing+) is a Lisbon based project,
developed by the Seawoman Association with the financial support of the Portuguese
Institute of Sports and Youth as part of the National Sport for All Program.

The main goal of Vela+ is to promote active living in senior citizens, trough sailing. Using
Sailing as the main motivation, this program integrates physical conditioning, health
monitoring, motor coordination and cognitive training. All this activities encompass an
holistic approach to health living, using the nautical culture and the relation between
Lisbon citizens and the river, to promote Lisbon as an Age-Friendly City.
This Special Session “Sport for All - Sport in the Cities” emerges as a way to exchange
ideas and good practices and to discuss strategies that promote the sport for all vision, in
our cities. Also important is the role that cultural, geographical, environmental,
technological and health areas may have in the way citizens of all ages are encouraged
to develop physical activity.
